The Stevie Chronicles - The Beginning

This is a chronicle of the life and times of Stevie, a miniature pinscher blind from birth who was found wandering the streets of Garland, TX (near Dallas) at approximately 6 - 7 weeks of age (!). We believe she started out in a puppy mill or with backyard breeder - her tail was already docked. When they discovered she was blind, and therefore, simply a drain on financial resources, she was turned loose to fend for herself.

That might have been the end of little Stevie, except for her own strength and will to live and a series of events that landed her in an adoptive home in Austin, Texas.

Stevie (first named "Penny" and then "Mattie" -- which means 'strong one' in German) ended up in the Garland animal shelter. The kind folks at the shelter cleaned her up, deinfested her of ticks and fleas and gave her lots of TLC and food to help fatten her up. Realizing she was blind, they were concerned that they might not be able to adopt her out. They called IMPS (Internet Miniature Pinscher Service) and asked for help.

One of TX IMPS volunteers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area went and picked her up and another volunteer in the area fostered her, treating her for kennel cough and nursing her for a couple of weeks until she could get her first shots. Then she was ready for transport to her new adoptive mom...

good god! now i know why it's called IMPS......
that's all they adopt out! o.k., so as a mostly cat-type person my learning curve with Stevie has been a straight, vertical line. that's all right, i'm still a moderately quick study even in my advancing years...HA! to say that she wears me out is like saying Dick C. is not the best choice of quail-hunting partners. i am used to being ignored and/or hissed at by cats as i walk by. NOTHING gets by Stevie, blind or not. Ginger has been keeping many of you up to date on Stevie's progress and i can now take over some of that via this blog. and she also swears i am more fun now that i have a dog.....until next time, Stevie's mom (megan)
p.s. she had her second set of shots and weighed in at 3.44 lbs today
